In reformation times the church used by Huntly residents was the Castle Chapel. During the Reformation Huntly castle became a safe refuge for Jesuit priests .

Following the pangs of Reformation, the Conventual Franciscans made efforts to establish itself once again in the English soil. St. Anthony’s Rye, was one of t he first churches of the re- establishment of the Order.

In the early 1980s, Archbishop Dermot Ryan expressed a willingness to re-establish the Conventual Franciscan Order in Ireland.
