History
St. Clare’s is one of the most magnificent churches in Manchester, noted for its unique simplicity and beauty. Manchester, known as the gateway to the Northwest of England, is the second-largest city in the country. Now, the city’s centre is filled with medieval and modern art and masterpieces of Victorian architecture. It has several churches of outstanding beauty. Among them is St. Clare’s, the only Franciscan church in the city.
Having established itself in this great historic city, which was once known as the industrial heart of the world, St. Clare’s has played a prominent role in shaping the spiritual prospects of many people. Situated on Victoria Avenue, near the fabulous and extensive gardens of Heaton Park, St. Clare’s Church offers spiritual solace and peace to all the inhabitants of this metropolitan city.
St. Clare’s began as a small church in 1929, serving the spiritual needs of the immigrant Catholics who settled on the outskirts of industrial Manchester. Today it has developed into a place of vigorous pastoral life, setting the scene for several spiritual celebrations and ceremonies. Over the course of 75 years, a very vibrant catholic community has emerged around St. Clare’s parish. It is keen to continue the Franciscan charism and reflect the best spirit of St. Clare of Assisi. Today, it also runs a prestigious school that provides an excellent education to hundreds of children.
The present church of St. Clare’s was completed in 1958. It is quite spacious and attractive, with a wonderful interior featuring side altars, mosaics, and extensive pews. The most prominent feature of the church is the colourful mosaic above the high alters, which shows St. Clare of Assisi raising the Blessed Sacrament, a source of blessings and spiritual protection.
